In 2016 Winterhawk Well Abandonment Ltd. was established to develop and commercialize multiple technologies for wellbore integrity improvement and more effective wellbore abandonment and site reclamation procedures. This included a revolutionary method of safely and effectively expanding casing and other heavy-walled tubulars inside of wellbores; technologies for in-situ soil remediation; and using eutectic salts for wellbore sealing.
However, ongoing testing and discussions with potential customers revealed that the most promising commercial opportunity for the company and operators was controlled casing expansion. For the first time, production casing could be used for annular integrity improvement, not just as a barrier between the inside and outside of the wellbore.
This created opportunities for operators to cost-effectively and materially reduce or eliminate vertical communication of gas or liquids in the annulus; return deformed casing to circularity in high-angle and horizontal applications without the loss of integrity associated with milling or mechanical swaging; or expanding tubulars for high-temperature, steel-on-steel seals and improving sealing on liner tops, liner, hangers or casing patches.
Since the company’s founding the casing expansion technology has evolved and undergone significant field testing. With the move into production applications and the focus on casing expansion, the company has changed as well.
The name change to Radial Casing Solutions reflects the future primary focus of the company.
